A Unique Heritage
The Kadwell Family Farm headed today by Garry Kadwell and his son Daniel who are 4th and 5th generation farmers on a quest to create the most flavoursome and nutritious potatoes within the framework of sustainable, i.e. regenerative agriculture.
The biggest challenge has been how within this particular environment to balance the
topography, native plantings, the soils with the requirements of elements to be farmed such that the balance of “nature’s best” could be adhered to and developed to. Central to this is the relationship of soils, climate and climatic zone to the nutritional-flavour balance and developmental requirements of the potato plants. Secondly, within the plant and its nutritional-flavour structure, is the requirement to build as greater natural immunities from insects and disease pressures through ecological zones that work with nature and are not trying to manipulate it. Thirdly, the focus then is on understanding what each potato truly releases in flavour when cooked so as to have the right range of varieties for households and restaurants, and thus how to draw through these flavours from the nutritional structure in the growing process.
